Intellectual disability and learning difficulties represent overlapping neurological conditions that affect how individuals acquire, process, and express information and notably affect their ability to succeed in a traditional classroom. The spectrum of learning disabilities includes dyslexia, dysgraphia, and dyscalculia. Meanwhile, intellectual disabilities involve broader cognitive limitations that impact adaptive functioning, reasoning, and problem-solving across multiple spheres of life. Even though both conditions require specialised educational support, in reality, it is dominantly absent from the education systems.Â
The prevalence of learning and intellectual disability in India presents a substantial educational challenge. In a given classroom, 1 in 4 children face learning difficulties, making 10 and 12 percent of the school-going children population. Despite this prevalence, most teachers are not equipped with adequate knowledge and understanding to effectively navigate and provide differentiated intervention strategies that address each student's unique needs.
Performance-based learning offers an alternative that has the potential to transform educational outcomes for both populations by providing multisensory, engaging, and developmentally appropriate learning experiences. Music therapy, for instance, plays an augmenting role in improving reading skills and phonological awareness. It also shows advantageous results on cognitive abilities, working memory, and auditory attention in students with learning disabilities. With regular performance-based intervention, students with intellectual disability can actively work on communication goals, behavioral regulation, social-emotional development, and motor skills. Performance-based interventions open possibilities for student-centered learning where traditional content delivery methods are supplemented by opportunities for students to show what they have learned, rather than following a set examination pattern.
In this vein, Project TAAL is aimed at promoting and accelerating the accessibility of alternative learning pedagogies by the integration of performance-based learning methodologies and music therapy interventions. The initiative approaches implementing the changes through comprehensive teacher training, resource development, and direct student engagement. The initiative also includes crowdfunding for establishing a music room to build a long-term support system where students can hone their academic competence and confidence.
